Record Executive Who Launched OZZY OSBOURNE Dies At 73
January 31, 2005The Associated Press is reporting that Donald Dempsey Sr., a recording industry executive who is credited with having helped launch OZZY OSBOURNE's solo career, died Thursday (Jan. 27). He was 73.
Dempsey died at home of what was believed to be a stroke, said his son, Don Dempsey Jr. of New York.
Dempsey Sr., a senior vice president with CBS Records for 25 years, brought out the best in artists and singers, said Tony Bongiovi, president of Bongiovi Entertainment in South Florida and cousin of rocker Jon Bon Jovi.
Dempsey Sr. became general manager of Epic, Portrait and CBS Associated Labels Group and worked with OSBOURNE, QUIET RIOT, THE CLASH, CULTURE CLUB, LUTHER VANDROSS, THE ISLEY BROTHERS, RICKY SKAGGS and GEORGE JONES.
He was credited with aggressively marketing MICHAEL JACKSON's 1982 "Thriller" album, which sold more than 40 million copies.
